Cell Phones and Radiation Exposure

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Researchers recently examined the amount of radiofrequency (RF) exposure cell phone users undergo in various scenarios. The findings, published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, show that older analog technology produced the highest RF levels.  Of the various digital communications networks used by cell phones CDMA networks had the lowest RF (major carriers include Sprint PCS, Verizon and Virgin Mobile) while with GSM (AT&T and T-Mobile) and TDMA  (major US carriers have left this system)  showing similar intermediate levels. Generally users are exposed to higher RF power output in rural areas.

Radiofrequency is a form of electromagnetic radiation.  The National Cancer Institute states that there is no known links between cancer risk and RF, but research is still ongoing. ( Source: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/cellphones)

The Environmental Working Group published a report on Cell Phones and Radiation Exposure and recommends specific makes and models.

Radiation risks cited in full-body airport scans

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Full-body airport security scanners manufactured by Torrance-based Rapiscan Inc. expose the skin to high radiation levels that may lead to cancer and other health problems, according to researchers from the University of California, San Francisco.

Particularly at risk, the researchers said, are travelers who are pregnant, elderly or have weakened immune systems.

Comment: While radiation exposure should be avoided, the amount of energy emitted from the machines is equal to two minutes in flight at cruising altitude, said Dr. Alex Garza, chief medical officer for the Department of Homeland Security.

Travelers who do not wish to be screened can still opt for a full-body pat-down, Garza said.

Protective effect found for ginkgo against radiation damage

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

A report published in the October 11, 2009 issue of the International Journal of Low Radiation added evidence to a protective effect for Ginkgo biloba against radiation damage. Ginkgo biloba is a tree species whose leaves have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. Ginkgo leaf extract contains antioxidant compounds called ginkgolides and bilobalides which help scavenge free radicals that attack nearly all components of the cell, including DNA.

The researchers found a significant dose-dependent reduction in apoptotic cells among those treated with ginkgo. While radiation-induced apoptosis (cell death) occurred in nearly one third of irradiated cells not treated with ginkgo, the number declined to 5 percent or less in cells treated with the herb.

Make a safe call: Choose a low-radiation cellphone

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Recent studies suggest that there may be long term physical consequences using cells phones. While the debate continues, the Environmental Working Group, based in Washington, says it makes sense to chose a cellphone or wireless device with low radiation.

They’ve made it easy by providing an interactive database with radiation ratings for more than 1,000 cellphones marketed in the United States on their Web site. Go to www.ewg.org/cellphone-radiation to view it and to read the full report.
