First Animal Model of AMD May Help Develop Human Treatments

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have created the first animal model of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) caused by a mutation known to produce disease in people. The results of the study were published in the October 15 issue of Human Molecular Genetics. Because AMD develops late in life, it is a difficult condition to investigate. Patients typically show symptoms of AMD after age 60, and the only samples researchers have been able to use to study the disease were from patients who had died while in the early stages, when the tissue is not useful to study the progression of AMD. Some forms of the disease are inherited, and one type is thought to be caused by a mutation in the Efemp1 gene.

Pierce and colleagues created a mouse model of this inherited disorder by introducing the disease-causing mutation into the Efemp1 gene of mice. The resulting Efemp1-mutant mice develop the same basal deposits as people with AMD. Since this model is caused by a known mutation, the investigators believe it will provide a means to study the pathogenesis of basal deposits in the human eye and to test potential treatments to prevent basal deposit formation.

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids. This may occur from irritations and allergies, insect bites, infections, etc. Blepharitis may vary from a chronic, mild condition to a severe form with ulceration of the lids and damage to the eyes.

Typical symptoms can include: itching, swelling, scaling and crusting of the lashes. Blepharitis is often accompanied by styes and chalazions.

Conventional treatment depends on the specific type and severity of blepharitis. Mild specific may only require warm soaking and daily lid hygiene. Diluted baby shampoo may be used for cleansing of the lids. Other varieties of blepharitis may require antibiotics and/or cortisone cream , or even oral antibiotics, any of which should only be used under medical supervision.

For chronic blepharitis conditions, acupuncture may be helpful in getting to the underlying cause. The most common Chinese medicine patterns associated with blepharitis are Wind-Heat and Internal Damp-Heat.

Editor's Note: Our EyeEase formula was designed to help external eye inflammation such as blepharitis, styes, chalazion and conjunctivitis. This formula can be taken internally during flare-ups and also used as a compress (please follow specific compress instructions on our website).

Beta carotene supplementation associated reduced cognitive decline

The November 12, 2007 issue of the AMA journal Archives of Internal Medicine reported on a study which found that taking beta carotene supplements for 15 years or more may confer a protective effect against cognitive decline in older men.

The research team found that those who received beta carotene for an average of 18 years had significantly higher scores on several tests of cognitive function compared with those who received a placebo. Among men who had received short term treatment with beta-carotene there was no improvement observed.

It is estimated that up to one third of adults will experience a gradual decline in cognitive function known as mild cognitive impairment as they age (Low LF et al 2004; Busse A et al 2003).

While many conventional physicians view these defects as an inevitable consequence of aging, newer research has uncovered possible reasons for mild cognitive impairment and has also identified potential therapies that may enable people to battle age-related mental decline more effectively than ever before. Minimizing cognitive defects will become even more important as the average life span continues to lengthen and hundreds of thousands of people head into their 80s and 90s, when the risk for cognitive decline is greatest.

Studies have also shown B Vitamins to be influential in memory enhancement or cognitive loss. One study concluded that vitamin B6 improved storage and information retrieval (Deijen JB et al 1992). Another study reviewed vitamin B12 deficiency in relation to memory impairment and neuropathy in older people and concluded that both memory impairment and neuropathy can be successfully managed with vitamin B12 injections or supplementation (Carmel R 1996). One study determined that low levels of folate (a B vitamin) are associated with cognitive deficits and that patients treated with folic acid for 60 days showed a significant improvement in both memory and attention efficiency (Fioravanti MFE 1997).

Editor's Note: There are a number of nutrients shown to help support and improve memory function including gingko biloba, n-acetyl-cysteine. acetyl-l-carnitine, alpha lipoic acid, Coenzyme Q10, omega-3 fatty acids, etc. For an excellent brain support formula, see Brain Sustain

Effective Treatment for Fibromyalgia Featured on Oprah Winfrey Show 'You Don't Have to Live With That Agony!'

On a recent show, Oprah Winfrey interviewed Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon whose groundbreaking work has been helping many people who suffer from this condition.

Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic painful condition, primarily occurring in women, characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, and fatigue, and accompanied by tender points at defined locations, often associated with a non-restorative sleep pattern. It can be extremely debilitating, and difficult to treat as the diagnosis is often based on the symptoms. The cause is typically unknown.

As he stated, "Our SHIN protocol, published in the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (8:2, 2001), was found to improve the quality of life for patients by an average of 75 percent at 3 months and 90 percent at 2 years, with 90 percent of the study patients improving," he said. SHIN focuses on four vital areas of health: Sleep; Hormonal deficiencies (despite normal blood tests); Infections/Inflammation; and Nutritional deficiencies. The program has helped thousands of patients get their lives back after years of devastating pain and energy depletion.

A recent study by Dr. Teitelbaum published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (12:9, 2006) showed that a simple 5-carbon sugar called ribose (5000 mg 3x/day) increased energy in fibromyalgia patients by an average of 45 percent after only two weeks.

Blueberries could replace traditional drugs in treatment of oral cancer

Super fruits like blueberries, blackberries and papaya could be used to stop mouth cancer cells spreading through the rest of the body - as well as reducing mouth cancer risk - according to a study published in the Journal of Cancer Research.

The study, conducted at the University of Hong Kong, found that as well as suppressing the spread of cancer, lupeol also reduced the size of the tumour three times faster than the conventional cisplatin drug. When the two were used together they were even more successful.

The compound works by blocking a natural protein called NFkB which helps to grow and repair all cells - even cancerous ones.

Radio waves used to destroy liver tumors

United Press International

11-02-07

HOUSTON, Nov 1, 2007 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Texas researchers say animal tests show liver tumors can be destroyed by inserting carbon nanotubes that are heated with non-invasive radio waves.

The report, posted online in the journal Cancer, said the technique destroyed liver cancer tumors in rabbits. Researchers from The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Rice University said the next step is to find ways to more precisely target the nanotubes to avoid all normal tissue.

Dr. Steven Curley, a surgical oncologist at M.D. Anderson who was senior author of the report, said researchers are trying to bind the nanotubes to antibodies, peptides or other agents that target molecules expressed on cancer cells.

In the liver cancer experiment, a solution of single-walled carbon nanotubes was injected directly into the tumors. Four treated rabbits were then exposed to two minutes of radio frequency treatment, resulting in thermal destruction of their tumors, researchers said Thursday in a news release.

Carbon nanotubes are hollow cylinders of pure carbon that measure about a billionth of a meter across.

Vitamin D Supplements May Lower Risk of Death

A number of studies are showing that supplementing with Vitamin D (if not getting regular exposure to sunlight) can also help prevent some forms of cancer.

Healthnotes Newswire (November 1, 2007)Numerous studies have suggested that people with lower vitamin D levels are more at risk for developing chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis. Now a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that vitamin D deficiency may also increase a person's risk of death. The good news: supplementing with vitamin D may reduce that risk.

Canadian Cancer Society has declared that every Canadian supplement their diet with 1000 international units (IU) of vitamin D during winter months due to the growing body of scientific data linking low vitamin D levels with cancer. (The Canadian Pediatric Society also recommended that pregnant and nursing women take a 2000 IU vitamin D supplement during the winter to protect new mothers and their infants from rickets).

(Arch Intern Med 2007;167:17307; Arch Intern Med 2007;167:170910)

A recent double blind long-term, placebo controlled study conducted by researchers at Creighton University showed that 1100 IU of vitamin D taken by women in Nebraska for just 4 years, reduced the risk for all types of cancer by up to 70 percent.

According to Bill Sardi, "The toxic dose for vitamin D doesn't begin till 40,000 IU is consumed for many months. A full hour in the midday summer sun produces about 10,000 IU of vitamin D (full-body sun exposure), with no side effects whatsoever. "

The Dangers of Genetically Modified Food(GMO)

Jeffrey Smith, author of "Seeds of Deception" (Yes! Books,September 2003), describes the pervasiveness and hazards of genetically modified (GM) foods found in the foods we eat, many of which are not listed on the labels.

There are several places genetically modified foods are found. Smith identifies seven genetically modified food crops. Soy, corn, cottonseed, and canola are all commonly used in vegetable oils. Soy and corn derivatives are omnipresent in processed foods, and there are also Hawaiian papaya, and small amounts of zucchini and yellow squash. Additionally, there are dairy products that come from cows that have been injected with rGBH, a synthetic growth hormone, and there are genetically modified enzymes and food additives not usually identified on food labels. One exception is aspartame, a genetically engineered sweetener. Also included in the list of GM foods are milk and dairy products that come from animals fed genetically modified grain.

Smith says the potential hazards of eating GM foods include increased cancer rates, increased allergies, and the transfer of genes from the GM foods to the cells of bacteria in our bodies, and possibly our DNA. He states, "The only human feeding study ever conducted on GM foods verified the gene inserted on a stable basis. This means long after you stop eating a genetically modified food, you might have this foreign protein produced inside your gut. One more scary example would be if you ate a genetically modified corn chip, and the gene that produces the BT toxin (the pesticide) were to transfer to your gut bacteria, it could theoretically transform your intestinal flora into living pesticide factories. . . possibly for the rest of your life. In addition, genes might also transfer into your own cellular DNA, causing it to produce foreign proteins." There are things you can do to protect yourself from unknowingly buying and consuming GM foods. You can use the GMO food guide (easily found on line) and avoiding the items mentioned above. You can also examine the produce stickers on the fruits and vegetables you buy. The PLU code for conventionally grown produce consists of four numbers. The GM produce has five numbers prefaced with the number eight. Buy organic produce as often as you can. By definition, food that is certified organic must be free from all GM organisms.

What you can do:
  • Buy organic produce as often as you can. By definition, food that is certified organic must be free from all GM organisms.
  • Along with using the GMO Food Guide and avoiding the products mentioned above, there's other tricks you that can use to figure out if something is genetically modified in your fresh produce aisles:
  • Examine produce stickers on the fruits and vegetables you buy. The PLU code for conventionally grown fruit consists of four numbers; organically grown fruit has five numbers prefaced by the number nine; and GM fruit has five numbers prefaced by the number eight.
