Glaucoma and Nutrition Research
Alpha lipoic acid (1995 Study) & glaucoma
In a study of open angle glaucoma patients who received 150mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid each day, 45-47% of the eyes had enhancement of color visual
fields and visual sensitivity when compared to controls using only topical medical therapy. More advanced cases had an even better response
compared to their controls.
Ref:Filina, et al., Vestn Oftalmol 1995 Oct-Dec;111(4):6-8
Alpha Lipoic acid (1998 Study)
Lipoic acid may be useful in the treatment of glaucoma and may prevent ischemic optic nerve damage.
Altern Med Rev 1998 Aug;3(4):308-1
Vitamin C - Large doses of Vitamin C have been shown in several studies to
lower intraocular pressure through several mechanisms, including increased blood
osmolarity, decreased aqueous production, improved outflow and collagen support.
Acta Ophthalmology Scand, 1969.
Vitamin E Neuroprotection by Vitamin E in Glaucoma (2008 Study)
Compared with those receiving vitamin E, non-treated subjects showed a statistically significant reduction in visual field (change in mean deviation) at 6 and 12 months), and has neuroprotective benefits.
Engin KN et al. Clinical evaluation of the neuroprotective effect of alpha tocopherol in glaucomatous damage. Eur J Ophthalmol 17:528-33, 2007.
Vitamin B12 (1992 Study) - Glaucoma patients treated with vitamin B12 for over 5 years demonstrated better visual acuity and better overall control of their disease.
Glacome, 1992; ; Oftalmol Zh. 1965; 20(6); Klin Oczna 1974 Nov;44(11):1183-7.
Gingko Biloba has been shown to clinically improve visual field indices,
possibly due to the increased ocular blood flow benefits. In the study referenced
below, benefits resulted in 4 weeks supplementing with 120 mg
of ginkgo biloba daily.
Quaranta L et al. Effect of Ginkgo biloba extract on preexisting visual field damage in normal tension glaucoma. Ophthalmology 110:359-62 2003.
N-acetyl cysteine - which is a key component of glutathione, may help neutralize reactive oxygen species
in the trabecula meshwork that contributes to open-angle glaucoma.
Yuan He et al. Mitochondrial Complex I defect induces
ROS release and degeneration in trabecular meshwork cells
of POAG patients: Protection by Antioxidants. Investigative Ophthalmology Visual Science 49:1147-58, 2008.
Bilberry, pine bark combo ward off glaucoma (2008 Study)
A combination of bilberry and pine bark showed benefits in reducing intraocular
pressure after 2 months

Magnesium - glaucoma (1995 Study)
Patients suffering from open angle glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma who were given magnesium twice daily showed improvement of the
visual field and reduced peripheral vasospasms (which can cause glaucoma, stroke and heart attack) after four weeks of treatment.
Gasper, et al; Ophthalmologica 1995;209(1):11-3
Taurine (2003 Study)
Taurine, an amino acid concentrated in the eye and found in the optic nerve, may help
counter excess levels of nerve-damaging glutamate in the body. An acute dose has been
clinically shown to promote blood flow during oxidative stress by restoring vessels' ability
to dilate.
Fennessy FM, et al. Taurine and vitamin C modify monocyte and endothelial dysfunction in young smokers. Circulation 107:410-15, 2003.
Thoughts on other nutrients in this formula related to eye health:
Folate helps cell maintenance and repair, synthesis of DNA, amino acid metabolism
and formation of red and white blood cells.
Vitamin B12 helps support energy production, reduces stress, supports health heart function.
Quercetin is a bioflavonoid that supports cellular health and function. In human cell culture studies, it has been shown to block the manufacture and release of inflammation-causing substances
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine is the acetylated form of L-cysteine is very efficiently absorbed and has been shown to protect cells directly and support the immune system. NAC is an antioxidant and a free radical-scavenging agent that increases intracellular glutathione at the cellular level.
