Ashwagandha reverses behavioral deficits and plaque load in Alzheimer’s Disease models4 and inhibits amyloid beta fibrillation.5 Withanolides of ashwagandha may reduce inflammation, nerve cell death, and behavioral deficits.6 It may stimulate dendrite formation,7 8 stimulate neurite outgrowth,9 10 11 improve synaptic function, increase acetylcholine content, increase choline acetyl transferase activity,12 13 and modulate mitochondrial function.14

Astragalus

This traditional herb helps boost the immune system by supporting improved macrophage and phagocytosis.15 Astragalus has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Astragalus contains immune stimulants, adaptogens, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory agents. 16 These agents help improve general health and may help prevent disease or possibly help treat diseases. 17 The herb has been utilized in cases of upper respiratory infections, asthma, chronic kidney disease, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), chronic fatigue syndrome, and others. Astragalus’s active compounds have immunomodulating and protective effects, which can improve various organs, including the liver, kidneys, spleen, abdominal organs and tissues, and the bone marrow. 18 Astragalus may improve vision and prevent diabetic retinopathy, in part, by inhibiting the formation of AGEs (advanced glycosylated end products).19 20

Bilberry in the Digital Eye Strain Formula

This power-packed berry supports focusing capacity, helps prevent digital eye strain, and supports overall vision health.21 Bilberry is helpful for macular degeneration because it protects the retina against oxidative stress that results from free radicals.22 It is an effective neuroprotector.23

Bilberry helps stimulate the production of rhodopsin needed for night vision.24 25 It reduces oxidative stress26 and also reduces inflammation.27

Over forty years of research establish this herb’s value for vision health.28 29 30 31 Bilberry helps improve microcirculation of tiny blood vessels32 33 and therefore improve the delivery of oxygen to the eyes. They accomplish this by improving rhythmic changes in the diameter of blood vessels34 35 in the eye’s vascular system, as well as in the entire body. They help repair tissue,36 protect retinal nerve tissue,37 and generally support a healthy retina by supporting levels of antioxidants in the blood serum.38 Bilberry is found to protect against dysfunction of mitochondria (cellular energy producers) and also against neurotoxicity.39 Research indicates that bilberry may help slow the progression of cataract formation. In one study, a combination of bilberry and vitamin E successfully halted cataract development in 48 out of 50 patients with age-related cortical cataracts.40

Lycii Berries

Also known as goji berries, lycii berries contain bioflavonoids that strengthen the tiny blood vessels in the eye. Along with Chrysanthemum, lycii berries nourish the kidney, liver, blood, and yin. They are considered in Chinese medicine to be helpful for dry eyes, redness, and heat caused by yin (fluid) deficiency.

Camelia Sinesis (Green Tea)

Green teas and their extracts are potentially neuroprotective in the photoreceptor’s outer segment and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) by helping prevent apoptosis (cell death).41 The polyphenols found in green tea have been shown to enhance the function of the meibomian glands, which play a critical role in maintaining healthy tear film and preventing dry eyes.42 By improving gland function, green tea may help alleviate symptoms of dry eye syndrome and digital eye strain, and promote overall eye comfort.

Pasax Quinquefolius – American Ginseng

American Ginseng is one of the most commonly used medicinal herbs worldwide. Ginseng exerts positive effects on the functions of the nervous, cardiovascular, and immune systems. 43 44 45

Ginseng is an adaptogen that helps reduce eye fatigue, supports memory function, and reduces blood sugar levels. 46 47 48 49 50 This root helps improve memory with neuroprotective effects. 51 It is rich in plant bioactive phytochemicals, which provide a wide range of different biological activities resulting in hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective, and anti-tumor effects. 52 53 Ginseng strengthens Qi and Blood. Studies show that it improves cognitive function, supports the immune system, and regulates blood sugar levels. Research indicates improvements in working memory and a reduction in the severity of cold and flu symptoms.

Zingiber Officinale (Ginger)

Ginger is one of the most commonly consumed dietary condiments in the world. This root has natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger provides antimicrobial activity, neuroprotection, anti-obesity effects, anti-diabetic effects, a protective effect against respiratory disorders, and other bioactivities, including hepatoprotective and antiallergic effects. 54 55

Capsicum Anuum (Cayenne) for Digital Eye Strain

Capsicum annuum, commonly known as Cayenne pepper, has been traditionally valued in various medicinal systems, including Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Cayenne contains capsaicin, a compound known for its anti-inflammatory and circulation-boosting properties, which may help enhance blood flow to the eyes and reduce discomfort caused by prolonged screen exposure. Capsaicin supports vascular function and reduces oxidative stress, which are critical factors in managing eye strain.56. Originating in Central and South America, Cayenne pepper has been incorporated into various healing traditions globally.

Glycyrrhiza Glabra (licorice)

Licorice has a rich history, dating back to ancient Assyrian, Egyptian, Chinese, and Indian cultures. Traditionally, it was used to treat a variety of conditions, including menopausal symptoms, bacterial and viral infections, digestive issues, coughs, and diseases affecting the liver, lungs, kidneys, and circulatory system.57 It is often used in Chinese herbal formulas to enhance the benefits of other herbs.

Schishandra

This humble plant has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective effects, potentially improving liver function, reducing stress, and enhancing physical and mental performance. Schishandra has been used in the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, respiratory failure, cardiovascular diseases, body fatigue and weakness, excessive sweating, and insomnia. 58 It has also been reported to reduce hunger, delay aging, increase vitality, and improve mental health. 59 Schishandra supports the following: central nervous, sympathetic, cardiovascular, endocrine, and respiratory systems, as well as its adaptogenic, hepatoprotective, immunostimulant, antioxidant, ergogenic, and anti-stress activities. 60 61 62 63 64 In people who have both diabetic retinopathy and wet or dry age-related macular degeneration, taking bilberry resulted in increased macular thickness.65 In diabetic retinopathy, bilberry improved light sensitivity66 and slowed the onset of blood-retinal barrier disintegration.67
